The first week of Southwestern League Boys basketball has come to an end and two teams are undefeated with records of 2-0 and headed for a showdown next Thursday.

Temecula Valley improved its league record to 2-0 with a convincing 62-54 victory over the Pumas. Chaparral proved to be no match for the Golden Bears who are looking to displace defending champion Great Oak as the top dog in the mighty Southwestern League.

The Golden Bears started fast and never looked back as they dominated in almost every aspect of the game. Temecula Valley was led by junior guard Justin Simon who scored 18 points in the win. The brothers Schaefer were also instrumental in the Golden Bear attack. Senior Ryan scored 16 while younger sibling Riley added 12 points for Temecula Valley.

Junior forward Michael Scott led Chaparral with 14 points. Senior Ben Schultz scored 12 and fellow senior Drake Powers had 11 points for the Pumas.

Chaparral will travel to the Wolf Den Tuesday to take on the powerful Great Oak team that is tied with the Golden Bears for the league lead with a 2-0 record. Great Oak defeated the visiting Vista Murrieta Broncos 66-53 last Thursday. The Pumas are winless in league play.

Murrieta Valley rebounded from its disappointing league opening loss by defeating the Murrieta Mesa Rams. The Nighthawks got off to a quick start and broke out to a 30-22 lead at the half. The third period proved to be the deciding frame for Murrieta Valley.

The Nighthawks scored 18 points and held Murrieta Mesa to just six as they increased their lead to 48-28 as the fourth period began. It was just too much for the Rams to come back from. The Nighthawks played their bench and the game was won 62-50.

Senior Kevin Padlo led the Murrieta Valley scoring attack with 21 points. Senior Tyler Bilton added 18 points and led the Nighthawks in rebounds with nine. Mitch Lenhart also scored seven points and had eight assists.

Sophomore forward Davon Sanders was the Ramsí leading scorer with 14 points. Junior Bryan Phan scored 12 points for the Rams against the Nighthawks.

Murrieta Valley will be home Tuesday to host Vista Murrieta. The Broncos are 0-2 but have one of the best line-ups in the Southwestern League. They had the misfortune of starting the season against the two toughest teams in the league.

The Rams are now 1-1 in league play. They will have their hands full next week as Murrieta Mesa hosts the 2-0 Golden Bears. All games start at 7pm.
