The Nighthawk girls' water polo team continued it’s dominance in the Southwestern League as they defeated Vista Murrieta 18-2 in the Bronco pool. Murrieta Valley is without doubt the strongest team in the league and has beaten Murrieta Mesa and second place Great Oak in the opening rounds of league play.

The Nighthawks took a commanding 6-2 lead in the first period and then exploded in the second. Murrieta Valley outscored the Broncos 9-1 and built an insurmountable 15-3 lead by halftime.

Murrieta Valley’s Kayla Fedler led the Nighthawk attack with 8 goals. Gabbi Ritter scored three goals against the Broncos. Maddi Sanchez and Abi Auer scored two goals apiece for MVHS.

The Nighthawk’s swarming defense suffocated the Bronco offense. Abigail Govia was almost perfect in the net.

The Nighthawks were once again without the services of their scoring star Paige Virgil who is nursing an elbow injury. Virgil will be rested until she is at 100% before returning to the line-up. The Nighthawks want her healthy and in top physical condition for the CIF playoffs. She is expected back in the pool by Wednesday but may not play until the following week.

The top three teams in the Southwestern League are Murrieta Valley, Vista Murrieta and Great Oak. The Nighthawks have beaten their two rivals convincingly. Before Thursday’s thrashing of the Broncos, the Wolfpack felt Murrieta Valley’s fury in the league opener 21-6.

Great Oak is 2-1 as they defeated Vista Murrieta 16-8 and beat Chaparral 11-6 in league play. In other Southwestern League action on Thursday Murrieta Mesa came out on top 11-4 over Temecula Valley.
