Chaparral Can’t Keep Up in the Final Period and Fall To 0-3 In League Play

The Wolfpack took care of yet another Southwestern league rival Tuesday night as they ran away with the game in the fourth period. Great Oak is now 3-0 in league play and the defending champions are looking to repeat this year.

The Pumas came ready to play. Chaparral kept it close and trailed 27-20 at the half. The Wolfpack’s aggressive style of play brought out the "physical" in the Pumas as they refused to give in an be intimidated throughout the contest.

In the end, Great Oak proved to be just too much for Chaparral. The Wolfpack outscored the Pumas 42-28 in the second half to coast to their third straight league victory.

Wolfpack senior guard Jeremy Smith put on a scoring exhibition in the second half as he scored 13 of his game high 17 points. Latrelle Franklin scored 14 points including 4 crucial free throws don’t the stretch in the fourth period. Isaiah Wesby also scored 13 points for the Wolfpack.

Chaparral was led by senior Isiah Johns, Ben Shultz and Drake Powers who each scored 11 points apiece against the tough Wolfpack defense.

Chaparral will travel to Murrieta to face the Nighthawks Thursday night. MVHS is 2-1 in league play and still in the hunt for the league crown. The Wolfpack will head to Temecula Valley for a showdown with the Golden Bears who are also undefeated in league play with their eyes on brining home the Championship.

Both games Friday are part of the Southwestern league’s Coaches verses Cancer promotion. There will be a girl’ varsity game at 5:15 pm followed by the boys at 7pm at both venues.

Come out and support your favorite team and get involved in this worthwhile cause as the schools from the Southwestern league raise money to fight cancer.
