Murrieta Valley was just another casualty in Temecula Valley’s continuing assault on wrestling records as they lost to the perennial powerhouse 67-3. The win was the 100th consecutive dual meet victory for Coach Arnold Alpert during his tenure at the school and the 26th consecutive league championship for Temecula Valley High School (TVHS).

In 1995, Alpert’s very first year at TVHS, Alpert’s team won a CIF duals title as well as a CIF individual title. They repeated with another double title the next year. Over the years, Alpert and co-head coach Lyndon Campbell have led their teams to numerous CIF team titles, Southern Section Masters titles, and several top ten team finishes. They have also had a number of wrestlers place in state.

Alpert, who is now in his 20th year, and Campbell, now in his 18th year, have built a dynasty and put up numbers that may never be topped, but the celebration on Monday night, Feb. 3 following the match was taken in stride and neatly swept under the rug as both coaches took a more humble approach to the victory that has put them in the record books.

"Winning is attributed to the team mentality and our family atmosphere," said Alpert, who also added, "Our key to success has been love, and we believe if you let the kids know you care about them, they will compete hard for you."

"My hats off to Coach Alpert, he has put in the work to have an incredible program," Nighthawks’ first year coach Manny Murillo said of the veteran that is nearly seven years away from retirement. "Whether this is your first victory or your 100th win, the work is all the same and we came to wrestle, but they were the better wrestlers tonight."

"This is a monumental moment for not only Coach Alpert and the program, but also for our entire school," exclaimed TVHS Athletic Director Bill Moyer.

"This really feels good," 128-pound senior Ryan Moore said. "Coach Alpert has built me up over my past six years of wrestling and I really look up to him and Coach Campbell. To be a part of 26 straight league titles and 100 wins is just plain awesome."

The Southwestern League champions will try to add another CIF divisional dual meet title to their resume later this week, of course the celebration for now is about winning at home and owning a streak that’s been 20 years in the making.
