LAKE ELSINORE - A man was recovering today from injuries suffered when he was mauled by pit bulls outside a Lake Elsinore home.

The mauling happened just after 4 p.m. Tuesday in the front yard of a residence in the 18000 block of Honey Lane, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's Sgt. Linda Hughes said the 53-year-old victim, whose name was not disclosed, lived at the house, though it was not immediately clear whether the dogs belonged to him.

According to Hughes, neighbors saw the man being attacked by five pit bulls and called 911.

Witnesses "attempted to assist the male by ramming their vehicles into a gate" leading onto the property, providing an opening through which several of the canines ran out, Hughes said.

deputies arrived, the dogs had ceased their attack. The victim was transported to a hospital with bites to his face, arms and hands, according to Hughes, who added that the injuries were not life-threatening.

As deputies began searching the property for the dogs, they encountered two women who allegedly refused to answer questions or provide any assistance, she said.

Aurielle Branca, 20, and Gloria Osborne, 34, were arrested on suspicion of interfering with a police investigation. Both were cited and released from custody.

Officers with Animal Friends of the Valleys, a nonprofit that provides animal control services to cities throughout southwest Riverside County, impounded four grown pit bulls and two puppies.

It was not immediately known whether any of the dogs would be euthanized as a result of the attack.

Once they attack - they will do it again, unfortunately.
