The Nighthawks came out with their big guns blazing and exploded to a 20-5 lead in the first period of Tuesday night's CIF Southern Section Division 2AA Playoff game. The initial Murrieta Valley offensive blast proved to be the difference in the game as the Nighthawks took the contest in front of a noisy and spirited home crowd.

The Lancers regained their composure in the second period and played tough for the remainder of the game. In fact, Thousand Oaks outscore the Nighthawks by a point in the final three periods. The Lancers just could not repair the damage inflicted by Murrieta Valley in that opening period.

The Nighthawks had big games by Kevin Padlo and Tyler Bilton. Padlo led Murrieta Valley with 29 points and teammate and fellow senior Bilton scored 27 against the Lancers. Jordan Williams scored six points while Jacob Forte and Mitch Lenhart had four apiece. Lenhart also grabbed 9 rebounds and had six assists.

The victory sends the Nighthawks into the Quarterfinals Friday night. Murrieta Valley will be home to take on Foothill HS. The Knights finished second in the Century league and are coming off a 50-34 win against La Sierra. Game time is 7pm.

Elsinore hung on and slipped past Claremont HS. The Tigers nearly let this game get out of hand as the Wolfpack ended up a basket short in the final period after coming from a 58-42 deficit.

The Tigers’ Preston Beverly and Reynaldo Solorzano both scored 18 points against the Wolfpack. Trevon Lampkin and Travis Wilson put 12 points each on the board for Elsinore.

The Tigers will travel to Canyon HS for their quarterfinal match against the Cowboys. Canyon soundly beat La Habra 67-50 last night. Game time is also at 7pm Friday,
