Temecula woman wins final two events in major cycling competition

Sarah Hammer of Temecula won the final two events today to take the first-day lead in the women's omnium at cycling's 2014 UCI Track World Championships in Cali, Colombia.

Hammer finished second in flying lap in 14.165 seconds, then won the 20-kilometer points race and elimination race.

Hammer, the reigning world champion, has four points in the two-day, six-race event. Laura Trott of Great Britain, the gold medalist in the event in the 2012 Summer Olympics, is second with 10 points and Jolien D'Hoore of Belgium is third with 11.

receives one point, the second-place rider two points and so fourth. The rider with the lowest total score is the winner.

In the flying lap, cyclists ride 250 meters against the clock. In a points race, riders score points for sprints that occur every 10 laps around the 250-meter track and for lapping the field. Hammer finished with 25 points, three more than runner-up Jannie Salcedo Zambrano of Colombia.

The elimination race is a bunch race with an intermediate sprint every two laps with the last rider each time eliminated.

The omnium is scheduled to conclude Sunday.
