Boys Division 1AA

Its crunch time as three local teams prepare for tonight’s CIF Southern Section Basketball Semifinals. Third seeded Temecula Valley defeated Edison 68-63 Saturday night to advance to tonight’s match with Villa Park. The Golden Bears will be at home for the first time in the tournament.

Temecula Valley is focused on winning CIF. The Golden Bears are having the best season in school history. They were the undisputed Southwestern League Champions with an undefeated 10-0 record. They are 26-4 overall so far this year and are making their first appearance in a CIF Semifinal. They are the highest remaining seed in the division.

The Golden Bears will be facing a tough Villa Park team which was seeded seventh in the tournament and are 20-10 on the year. The Spartans have been here before. They reached the 2AA championship game last March and fell to Riverside North. They are coming off a narrow 65-62 victory over Alemany.

Perris will also be at home this evening and will face M.L.King in their Semifinal match. The Panthers are this season’s Sunbelt co-Champions with a 9-1 record in league play. They are 21-5 overall and are coming off an upset of number one seed El Toro 60-52 Saturday.

The Wolves are 22-8 this season and is an At-large team from the Big VIII League. ML King has cruised into the semifinal match with easy victories over Katella 73-35, Troy 78-35 and Lawndale 62-48. The Panthers will have their hands full tonight.

GIRLS Division 1AA

The Wolfpack will the face top seed in the Division 1AA tournament tonight as take the court to face Bonita High School from La Verne. Great Oak finished second to the Broncos in the tough Southwestern League with a 8-2 record. Overall, the Wolfpack is 22-3 and coming off a 50-45 quarterfinal victory over fifth seed Bishop Amat.

Bonita is just where they were predicted to be, in the final four but playing a team that no one thought would be here. . . except for the Wolfpack and their supporters. The Bearcats swept the Hacienda League Championship with a perfect 12-0 record. They are 27-2 overall and have been unstoppable in the CIF SS Division 1AA tournament.

But the Bearcats will be playing in the Wolf Den in front of a packed, noisy and enthusiastic Wolfpack crowd. You have to get there and experience it to truly understand. Go Wolfpack.
