More than 200 students from throughout Riverside County will demonstrate their knowledge of U.S. and world history today during the county's 31st annual History Day competition.

Elementary and middle school students from eight school districts, a charter school and two private schools will participate in the seven-hour event, slated to begin at 9 a.m. at Ramona High School in Riverside.

This year's theme will be "Rights and Responsibilities in History."

Students will make team presentations, show documentaries and display exhibits to showcase how well they know subjects anchored in the theme, according to organizers.

No teacher advisers are allowed to participate once the contest gets under way.

The top-scoring teams will advance to the National History Day - California State Competition, slated for April 25-27 in Riverside.

The national contest is set for June 15 at the University of Maryland, College Park.
