Lakeside (24-7, 10-0) got off to a fast 17-4 start against the South Pasadena Patriots (21-6, 9-1) in the second round of the CIF State Southern California Regional playoff. Lakeside star guard Kianna Williams hit the opening jump shot fifteen seconds into the first period; seconds later, Patriotsí star Lexie Scholtz responded with a jumper of her own. There were two ties and seven lead changes throughout the fast-paced game. Scholtz led all scorers with 27.

The Patriots went on a 16-0 run within three minutes to take a 20-17 lead by the 6:45 mark of the second period. Scholtz hit a jumper, a three and three layups to fuel the run. South Pasadena outscored Lakeside 14-7 and opened up an eight-point lead by halftime, 32-24. Scholtz had 14 points and the Patriots hit 12-of-17 free throws in the second period. Williams and Lakeside forward Victoria Sosa had picked up their third fouls.

"Itís huge having #33 (Kianna Wiliams) on the floor," said Lakeside coach Anthony Williams, "She makes the difference because sheís like our quarterback. She controls things on both ends of the floor."

Coming out of the locker room, Marissa Williams hit a three, two free throws, and an inside basket to put Lakeside up 33-32. Scholtz hit a three to retake the lead. Elise Takahama was fouled on a three and sank all three free throws. Kianna Williams scored on a coast-to-coast lay-up and then again on a beautiful spin dribble move in the key to re-tie the game at 38-all. The third quarter ended in a 44-44 tie on an inside basket by Lancersí freshman post Emma Merriweather. Merriweather was also a key factor on defense, denying the interior pass, changing shots and pulling down six defensive rebounds.

Tavian Lasley hit a shot clock buzzer-beating three and then two minutes later hit another three to extend Lakesideís lead, 56-49. "Tavianís three pointers were huge for us," said coach Williams, "I told her earlier to just keep shooting, you know your shots will fall." The Williams sisters went 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the victory. In the second half, Marissa scored 11 of her 14 points and Kianna scored nine of her 15. Lasley, Merriweather and Sosa each ended with eight points; Sosa had nine rebounds. Maia Crawley added seven points.

Lakeside outscored South Pasadena 20-12 in each of the last two quarters.

The Lakeside Lady Lancers advance to the CIF Regional Semifinals against the Santa Margarita Eagles (19-13, 2-6). The Eagles were fourth in the tough Trinity League that features powerhouses Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran, and JSerra. The Eagles defeated Central of El Centro 60-37 in the opening round of CIF State play and relied on a 28-point explosion to overcome Garfield-LA, 78-57. Guard Zaire Williams, the Eaglesí only senior, scored 22. She scored 18 in the CIF Division 3AA win over Inglewood and 24 in the semifinal win over La Canada for her season highs. Game

time is 7 pm Tuesday, March 18 at Lakeside High.
