Three Valley high schools – Great Oak, Murrieta Valley, and Chaparral – were recently named on The Washington Post’s 2014 Most Challenging Schools list.

The Post devised its own Challenge Index by dividing the number of college-level tests taken by the number of 2013 graduates. Those tests included Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE). No other factors were considered. The list includes the top ten percent of schools across the nation.

The list is dominated up top by private and charter schools. The top southern California schools are Northcoast Prep and Performing Arts Academy in Arcata (#21 nationally), Oxford Academy in Cypress (#33) and Preuss School UCSD in La Jolla (#39).

Great Oak leads the list of sixteen schools in the Inland area that made the list. Their index score of 3.126 Advertisement

is reflective of the five non-optional IB tests embedded in the IB program as well as the high number of students taking AP exams. The school has 21 AP courses, 17 IB courses and one Cambridge/ACE course. The four-year graduation rate is 98.4% with 45% going on to four-year colleges. The average ACT score is 23.5; average SAT is 1563.

Murrieta Valley is ninth out of the 16 schools and ranked #237 in the state with an index score of 1.464. No other information was available.

Chaparral is #12, #250 in the state with an index score of 1.37. They offer 19 AP courses, one IB course and one Cambridge/ACE course. Their four-year graduation rate is 99%; average SAT is 1511; average ACT is 22.1; 38% go on to attend four-year colleges.

Congratulations to these local schools for their academic rigor and national recognition!
