Great Oak senior Brad Wegman scattered seven hits over seven innings before giving the ball to Eli Lingos who came in to relieve him in the last inning. Lingos picked off a runner at first and struck out two Golden Bears to shut down Temecula Valley as the Wolfpack took sole possession of first place in the Southwestern League.

Lingos got the save and Wegman may have won the most important game of the season for Great Oak. Despite three first-inning hits and a bases loaded situation, the visiting Golden Bears came up empty. Wegman held the Bears’ bats to only two hits in the second through sixth innings before Lingos stepped up in relief.

It was a huge difference from the 10-2 game on Tuesday when the Wolfpack bats (ten hits) just couldn’t be silenced. Great Oak managed only four hits against the Golden Bears. Mitch Hayes managed to score the only run in the game in the bottom of the second. He got to second on a two-base error by the centerfielder, advanced on a sacrifice fly and scored on a wild pitch/passed ball. Chandler Wagoner was 2-for-3 with two doubles in the contest for the Wolfpack.

The Wolfpack jumps past Temecula Valley into sole possession of first place with the victory. Great Oak is now 9-4 in Southwestern League play with two games left to play. Temecula Valley falls into a tie for second with Vista Murrieta with identical records of 8-5. The Nighthawks lost to Chaparral 6-4 and are now in third, The Pumas and Rams are at the bottom of the standings.

The Wolfpack will play its final two league games against last place Murrieta Mesa. The Rams are a solid team but have not done well in league. Temecula Valley will play a tough Nighthawk team looking to be the spoiler and stay in the contention for the CIF SS Playoffs. Murrieta Valley lost their last meeting 1-0.

Vista Murrieta is also still in the hunt and will finish the regular season with two against Chaparral.
