TEMECULA - A motorist led California Highway Patrol officers today on a predawn 100 mph car chase that entered into San Bernardino County and ended in Temecula.

The driver of a white Audi sedan had traveled west on Interstate 10 in Beaumont and at some point entered San Bernardino County when CHP officers caught him driving with paper plates and gave chase, CHP Officer Rich Murrieta said.

CHP officers out of Temecula received a 1:50 a.m. dispatch about the speeding motorist coming out of Box Springs on southbound Interstate 215. They used a spike strip on the freeway, south of the Advertisement

Fourth Street bridge in Perris, which flattened the Audi's two front tires, Murrieta said.

The driver continued heading south on the Interstate 215 on his car's rims and then entered the southbound Interstate 15. He got off the Temecula Parkway exit, drove past Margarita Road and plowed into an Applebee's restaurant sign, Murrieta said.

The driver, a 27-year-old Banning resident, was arrested on suspicion of evading and drunken driving, among other violations. His name was not immediately available as he was treated at a hospital as a precaution following the crash, Murrieta said.

The suspect drove alone, the officer said.
