MORENO VALLEY - A duffel bag dropped outside a Moreno Valley home improvement store led today to an evacuation and the lockdown of nearby school campuses until a bomb squad determined it posed no threat.

Managers at the Home Depot at the intersection of Iris Avenue and Perris Boulevard called 911 after employees spotted the bag at the back of the property around 7:15 a.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

later and established a "safe zone," evacuating the location and placing nearby March Middle School and Rainbow Ridge Elementary School on lockdown as a precaution, sheriff's officials said.

Members of the agency's Hazardous Devices Team, or bomb squad, were sent to investigate, and upon closer inspection, determined that the bag contained some "personal items and paperwork," but little else, according to a sheriff's statement.

The evacuation order and lockdowns were lifted within two hours.
