This has been a difficult week in the city of Murrieta. We have been challenged and in some ways we fell down in the face of the challenge. We have been both celebrated and vilified locally and in the national press -- and mostly based on inaccurate interpretations of the same issue. On Monday, Mayor Long gave a press conference. During that press conference he recognized people's right to peaceful protest. He also expressed frustration with the federal immigration policy that appears to be encouraging women and children from Central America to migrate to the US via the Rio Grande Valley. He recognized that immigration is the responsibility of the federal government, but was concerned that the Murrieta Border Patrol station would be receiving 140 women and children every 72 hours for processing. This facility is not appropriate for that purpose - it is essentially a jail, designed to hold drug runners and criminals caught at the Border Patrol checkpoint on I-15 just south of Temecula. When Mayor Long expressed frustration with the federal government and recommended protest, he was suggesting that concerned citizens contact their US Representatives and the President to share their thoughts. To that end, a list of federal offices, Members of Congress representing our area and the White House phone numbers were compiled on a list that was shared at the press conference.

Sadly, too many people took this as encouragement to protest the arrival of buses carrying the women and children to the Border Patrol station in Murrieta. Protesters came from around the southland to oppose the arrival of undocumented immigrants to Murrieta for processing. In the face of the protest, three buses were turned around and the protesters claimed victory. This was not victory. It was a loss for the city of Murrieta, for the community that we live in and love. It made this extremely compassionate community look heartless and uncaring. That is NOT the Murrieta that we all know and love.

There appear to be two sides to this issue - those who believe Mayor Long was encouraging them to stand in front of the buses in protest, and those who believe that Murrieta does not recognize that the US is the envy of the world and that people want to migrate here, even at the risk of their lives and the lives of their children. Both sides are wrong. We understand that people want to come to the US to seek a better life for their families, and we are a compassionate people who want to help. But we also are a country whose legal system is based on the rule of law, and the people migrating must do so within the boundaries of the law. The protests resulting from the incorrect interpretations of Mayor Long's comments have given our community a black eye.

To be clear, the City of Murrieta's primary role is public safety. Our police department has been out in force to protect the lives and the rights of those individuals who have chosen to protest. We are proud of our police department knowing that they have done an outstanding job of maintaining the peace.

Beyond that, we recognize that there is a battle in play between the Congress and the President over immigration. True, this is a federal issue and should be resolved at the federal level. But it is affecting our community is a very real and ugly way. This brings us back to Mayor Long's original message - we should be contacting our US Representatives and the President and letting them know that their failure to resolve this issue has damaged our community, and not only ours, but communities throughout the southwestern US. We should be encouraging them to begin a dialogue - a dialogue that we are very ready to be part of.

And above all, we should show everyone what a truly compassionate and caring community Murrieta is!

Rick Dudley

City Manager

I'm very sorry that you feel that way. In my estimation the people of Murrieta should be applauded for their peaceful action on behalf of their city and citizens. We have seen for the past 5 plus years that the federal government won't do anything to put a stop to the free flow of Illegal immigrants to this country.
As a matter of fact, they are facilitating this illegal action and assault on our sovereignty. Respectfully, Mr. Dudley, it is politicians like you that continue to be the problem in America. You would have us all apologize for thinking that America is special. That won't happen sir. Many of us took an oath to protect this country and its Constitution with our lives. We have never gone back on that oath and never intend to. Yes, our community is a wonderful and compassionate community. We would like nothing more than to keep it that way without the federal government trying to destroy our way of life. As for the Illegal immigrants from wherever they come, they need to get in line and come to this country in the manner prescribed by law.
Thank you for your kind attention to this response to your weak apology for our actions.

Rick - This situation has been, in general, peaceful political activism in the face of a Federal Government that does not give a hoot about Murrieta. We were passed their problem without our knowledge or consent. This is an unending series of babies on doorstep that we are to expected by others, including yourself apparently, to graciously accept. This situation requires a fuss -- and in the other direction from the one you are addressing. I challenge our Federal Government to allow busloads of ILLEGAL ALIENS (lets call them what they are) to be routinely deposited in their bedroom communities. The ARROGANCE of the government to dump this problem on Murrieta to a totally ill-equipped and understaffed field office is beyond civility. I think you should thank and defend US who are doing YOUR JOB in blowing back. I am proud of the example Murrieta has set for the rest of the country and only hope the rest of the country follows suit in order to prompt serious, long-overdue changes that our Federal Government owes the citizens who elected them. My suggestion is that you help, Rick, or get out of the way.

Let them get in line for legal immigration. We will welcome them with open arms. We must stop illegal immigration. These people have put themselves in this situation. We must deport them to send the message that coming here illegally will not be tolerated and they should not waste their time. Where does this stop?

Dear Murrieta City Manager Rick Dudley

re your "message to the community" calling for greater civility from those opposed to the government's approach to the mass influx of undocumented immigrants."

Please post your resume so we can find a dozen bi lingual illegal DEMmigrants to send to college FOR FREE and have them take your job, either working for 1/6 your pay and doing at least as good a job as you TELLING AMERICANS TO BEND OVER AND TAKE IT IN THE REAR.

Then you can be one of the TENS OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS on foodstamps and unemployment because of the polices of donkeys like you and obama and the rest of the fools who support spending more money INTENTIONALLY breaking the law bringing in these 62,000 LLEGALS than we do SECURING OUR BORDER.

Mayor Long encouraged people to protest the federal government and local conservative politicians joined in this stance. Having Murrieta police clear a path so the federal government could process these immigrant refugees would have been the responsible inter-agency thing to do, but local politicians were looking to score political points to protest our federal government. Turning the buses back cost taxpayers more and blemished Murrieta's reputation. These same politicians are the first to grab federal dollars yet they also want to protest -- or bite -- the hand that feeds them. Murrieta officials were very happy to have ICE build a border patrol facility in their city where federal agents shop, eat and live. I recall no opposition, but once that federal facility was being used for its intended purpose, local politicians climbed on a soapbox to cry foul. The best way for local city and county politicians to protest the federal government they despise is to stop taking federal dollars. Stop contributing to the national debt! Take the money out of where your mouth is. Mayor Long has threatened to bill the Obama administration for the cost of the protest the Mayor instigated. The federal government should charge the city and withhold federal dollars from city leadership that impeded the operation of a federal facility. Happy Fourth of July. Enjoy the freedom to yell at refugee women and children on a bus. This is the home of the free, but what transpired in Murrieta didn't look so brave.

I think Manager Dudley's statement is overly generous to Mayor Long. Long was clearly engaging in fear-mongering and deliberately trying to incite a mob.

Why is it so many people only see what the Alynski-ites want you to see? Dont you all see that the humanitatarian aspect of this is just a ruse? Your being played like a stratovarious! The left doesnt give a rip about the kids! If they did they wouldnt put them in such jeapordy to further thier adgenda. This is pure rules for radicals kind of crap. Its the only way dear leader knows. Its meant to divide us and also to gain more demoncrap voters. Thr end goal is to gain totalitarian power forever. Which means you lose your liberty and freedom forever. Wake up.

This kind of flip flopping and supporting criminals is typical of the political type that have to talk out of both sides of their face. Dudley can't take a piss without asking for permission. He can save his ignorant comments. And depending on the Mayor and his position, any of this kind of BS flip flopping and he can look forward to a recall.

Mr. Dudley I find your comments and lack of spine rather disturbing. Sometimes you cannot walk both sides of fence of an issue and must make a stand on one side or the other. You can point at Washington and blame them, but that is only a side step and it allows you to waffle and the situation continues. Sir the problem is here and it is now and what is needed is what is happening: decisive action that Washington cannot ignore.
With the call to action of our local officials is contacting our representatives is exactly why we are here, it is a message that is easily ignored and promotes an endless parade of hearings and meetings by more spineless public officials who fear offending a voting block and this situation in or town will continue on and on.

When you boil it all down what you really have is a community who will not let the federal government dictate the activities they want inflict upon their town.

If that gives us a black eye then perhaps you need to man up, I see it as a courageous act of defiance by a little town that wants control over what will happen within their borders.

Rick Dudley jumps in and claims The Problem is that the Congress and the President will not get together to develop a solution. Wrong. The Problem is that Pres Obama will not enforce the laws that exist.
Also, Dudley promotes compassion. But , look it up, compassion is a person to person interaction. Compassion is one person understanding the misery or suffering of another and then doing something to alleviate that misery or suffering. Neither Mr. Dudley ( or I ) know anything of the individuals on those many buses. We do know that the Catholic Church, Central American Govt officials and Central American media told the bus riders that if you want to go to the USA, you should go now [ because Prez Obama will not do anything to stop you.] Just letting a bunch of buses unload is not compassion.
My bet is that Dudley talks a great compassion game, compassion to him is something that other people should engage in, but Dudley wont be able to tell you one thing he has ever done to be compassionate.

The Federal Government isn't doing its job to protect the borders.
Things are so bad, crowds of adults and children now simply walk into our communities and attach themselves to our social services.
I can barely make ends meet, and they become MY wallet and MY community's responsibility?
This is insanity.
Kudos to the people who had the moral courage to block the road. We are not going to get these problems fixed until there is more pubic outrage and more civil disobedience. And in the absence of the authorities DOING THEIR JOB, nonviolent protests are admirable, appropriate and to be applauded.
Dear God, please send us for leaders some people who have BACKBONES.

A final thought: the only thing D.C.'s "immigration reform" will bring us is MORE OF THE SAME PROBLEMS. With 20 million unemployed or under-employed Americans, the solution is to have FEWER people arriving, not MORE. They are selling us down the river, to pander to corporate lobbies that want cheap labor.

@vicks - it's people like you, nave and do not look at the BIG PICTURE. No haters here, but law abiding, voting citizens that want the laws of this land followed.

Why do you think this has been a great country...We have laws for illegal immigration we want followed. Not a president that disregards the laws and does everything he 'wants' to... Take a few home with you...one border patrol already has scabies.

Do these protestors have a permit? Why were they not arrested for obstructing the work of the federal government? The mayor has encouraged these protestors and remains guilty should any physical harm occur to any protestor, immigrant or worker.

I support Mayor Long's speech.

I think Cities have the right to speak out for themselves, not just bow down to the federal government.

This must be just a difference of opinion between Mayor Long and Mr. Dudley, but given the stance each has taken, I would personally want Mayor Long in charge of my city.

To listen to most of the media you would think that turning these buses around is considered despicable by everyone except the protesters. But most of "the people" in America understand that we have a right to a country with borders-just like every other country on planet earth. We just need the nerve to say no to PC lies and exercise that power. I'm proud of these patriots.
