A man fatally shot his estranged ex-wife in Jurupa Valley, then drove to San Bernardino where he reportedly killed himself, sheriff's deputies said today.

Simona Mateas, 43, died of her injuries at a hospital Saturday. Avram Mateas reportedly shot himself later in San Bernardino, police there reported, although no details about the apparent suicide were released.

The couple were going through divorce proceedings, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Todd Torrenti said.

Riverside County sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 8:36 a.m. Saturday to a home in the 3400 block of Skylane Drive home in response to an assault with a deadly weapon call. They found Simona Mateas suffering from gunshot wounds in the driveway, as well as a second person who was injured inside the home, Torrenti said.

The second victim was not identified. He or she somehow suffered what the sergeant described as non-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Several hours later, the San Bernardino Police Department received a call of a suicide in the city. Authorities identified Avram Mateas as the person who killed himself, Torrenti said.

It was not disclosed how Mateas committed suicide or where he did it in San Bernardino. The investigation was ongoing, Torrenti said.
