The father of Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim in the 1999 Columbine High School shooting rampage, will speak next month at a program sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education.

Darrell Scott, co-founder of the nonprofit Rachel's Challenge, will address educators, child welfare workers, law enforcement officials and other community members on Aug. 13 at the county's Education Conference Center in Riverside.

17-year-old Rachel herself penned in her diary not long before she was killed by two fellow students fulfilling a murder-suicide pact on April 20, 1999.

Scott and more than 30 other volunteers travel the nation, giving talks underscoring the need for more compassion and understanding to prevent bullying and other forms of hostile expression in schools.

According to the Rachel's Challenge website, the organization reaches more than 2.5 million students annually in a variety of venues.

The Aug. 13 presentation will be free and open to the public.
