A big rig carrying lemons lost half its load on all lanes of Northbound Interstate 15 near Rainbow this morning when it was struck by another vehicle, and all lanes of the freeway were temporarily shut down, a CHP press information officer reported today.

The 61-year-old male driver of a 2005 Peterbilt 3 axle dump truck dropped his cup of coffee and reached down to grab it. When he re-obtained his beverage and returned to a normal driving position he observed a slower moving truck directly in front of him and could not stop himself from colliding into the rear of it, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

approximately 25 mph up hill when he felt the impact.

All lanes of the freeway were shutdown as crews worked to clean up the fallen lemons. Alcohol and drugs were not believed to be a factor in the collision, according to Bettencourt.

The incident is still under investigation at this time, Bettencourt said.

RAINBOW - Drivers on northbound Interstate 15 began experiencing significant delays about 8:30 this morning, Wed., August 13, due to a semi losing its cargo across all lanes of the freeway, causing authorities to issue a Sig Alert for the area.

According to the California Highway Patrol, it appears that the semi's radiator "blew," which led to the incident.

Authorities have stated all northbound lanes are closed, but it appears at this time that traffic is beginning to be slowly diverted around the incident at this point.

I had had an issue with California's 55mph limit for trucks since I can remember. Trucks that are limited to 55 cannot gain enough momentum downhill to climb the next hill or grade at a decent speed. These big trucks lose their momentum and then are faced with having to climb the next hill at a dangerously slow speed. Let see.... trucks going 25, cars going 80, motorcycles lane splitting the cars at 100...stupid. When are California lawmakers going to get smart and allow trucks to do 70 so they can gain some momentum for the next hill? The 55mph truck law tells us all just how dumb California lawmakers are. These big rigs having to stick to 55 just become a rolling safety hazard uphill because they cant keep their speed up. They need the momentum they could get from going faster, and faster yet downhill. (And, NO, they aren't more unsafe at 70 or 75 vice 55 so get over it). They're like big boulders in a fast moving stream when they aren't allowed to drive with the flow of traffic. Driving around them in traffic is like white water rafting. Look out for the rocks! (I mean trucks!)

The 55mph truck speed limit law in California is a JOKE. Although it's a money maker for the State of Calif. because so many trucks rarely observe the law unless the CHP is behind them. Do the math.....there's too many trucks and not enough CHP to enforce the law. 70mph is too fast for city freeway but probably ok on I-5 open road between bakersfield and Sacramento and north to oregon. Let's not forget the FedEx doubles that killed several teenagers earlier this year that came across the north bound lanes and collided with the busload of teenagers. Heavy trucks that are speeding in traffic are a recipe for disaster. More CHP and 65mph speed governors on trucks.

To number 5, you obviously don't drive the freeways in socal very often. I drive them for hours and hours, day in and day out, and have been for 40 years now. I started driving over-the road tractors when I was 9. (Illegally, yes. My father was a truck driver and he let me drive by myself starting when I was 12.) Semi-trucks very nearly always are doing the 55mph limit. That limit is a joke, I agree, but not for the same reason you think it is. it;s a joke because it impedes traffic and causes more accidents than it is meant to prevent. If the trucks were allowed to run at the speed of traffic you would be very surprised how well and good and safely all traffic would flow. Much better, it would. Speed alone is rarely the cause of tractor-trailer accidents. It's stupid 4-wheeler jerks that swerve in front of and cut off trucks without thinking about how hard it is to stop 80 thousand pounds of steel and freight. Aggressive driving by all the 4-wheelers around is what causes the vast majority of accidents that involve trucks. it's true. Keeping a 55 or 65 mph lid on their top speed has absolutely NOTHING to do with it. PERIOD. Get a clue, don't spew your ignorance.
