Temecula Police Department: With start of school year, it's time to observe traffic safety

Wednesday, August 13th, 2014
Issue 33, Volume 18.

TEMECULA - The Temecula Valley Unified School district begins the 2014-2015 school year on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. The streets of Temecula will be more congested with the added traffic during the beginning and end of the school day.

Children will be out on foot, bicycles, and on scooters. The Temecula Police Departmentís School Resource and Traffic Units would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists and pedestrians to be more aware, to slow down, and pay attention to each other on the roadway.

Reminders for motorists:

-Watch out for children.

-Observe the posted speed limit and watch for school zones.

-Do not pass a stopped school bus when its lights are flashing.

-Do not pass other vehicles while in a school zone or at a crosswalk.

-Drivers must yield the right-of-way to Advertisement

any pedestrian in the roadway.

Reminders for parents and students

-Look both ways before crossing the street.

-Make certain the motorist sees you before stepping in front of a moving car.

-Cross the street at intersection crosswalks whenever possible.

-Watch carefully for approaching traffic. Wait for traffic to clear before crossing the street.

-Watch for turning vehicles at controlled intersections before stepping off the curb, even if the pedestrian signal says "walk."

-Parents picking up children should do so in a safe and designated area away from the flow of traffic.

-Parents encourage your children to wear appropriate safety equipment (i.e., helmets) when riding skateboards, bicycles, etc.

On behalf of the Temecula Police Department and the Temecula Valley Unified School District we would like to wish the children of Temecula another safe and successful school year.
