Former world champion to fight in Pechanga Resort main event

Issue 34, Volume 18.

Former World Boxing Association light middleweight champion Austin Trout will fight Australian Daniel Dawson in the scheduled 12-round main event of a boxing card at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula tonight.

Teddy Atlas, who will serve as the analyst for ESPN2's coverage, predicts a "one-sided fight" in Trout's favor.

"One of the reasons Trout's people would put him on ESPN without looking to get more money (is that) if you get more money, then you have to fight a more difficult opponent," said Atlas, who trained former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson for the first four years of his career.

"Dawson is a tough kid. He won't bring shame on himself. He's a tough, game guy. He will give it his all. His all probably won't be good enough, because he's not (at that) level of talent."

The 36-year-old Dawson is 40-3-1 with 26 knockouts and is fighting outside Australia for the sixth time.

Dawson won all four of his bouts in Indonesia. His one knockout as a professional came in his only previous fight in the U.S., when he suffered a 10th-round technical knockout at the hands of Sergey Dzinziruk of Ukraine, who was making a bid for a World Boxing Organization light middleweight title on March 14, 2010, in Santa Ynez.

The 28-year-old Trout is 26-2 with 14 knockouts, with both losses coming in his last two fights.

"Trout's been able to beat the level of fighters that Dawson has not been able to beat," Atlas said.

Dawson fights with a style that "usually makes fans happy," Atlas said.

"He's a rugged guy that really has only one gear and that is to come forward," Atlas said.

Trout "is a good defensive fighter, a good counter-puncher," Atlas said.

"He's a guy who likes to box," Atlas said. "He doesn't use his legs a lot."

"He's not an explosive puncher and maybe that will serve us well because that will allow Dawson to hang around and do what he does, which is banging away, keeping trying, keeping slugging until he finally hits something."

Trout won the vacant WBA light middleweight championship by defeating Rigoberto Alvarez in a 12-round unanimous decision on Feb. 5, 2011. He made four successful title defenses, then lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Saul Alvarez on April 20, 2013, when he sought Alvarez's World Boxing Council title.

In his most recent bout, Trout, who is from Las Cruces, New Mexico, lost to Erislandy Lara, a Cuban-born fighter who lives in Texas, in a 12-round unanimous decision on Dec. 7 for the interim WBA light middleweight title. Both fighters weighed in at the 154-pound limit.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. today, with the first fight of the 14-bout card starting at 6 p.m.

It is pathetic that we still promote boxing and cage fighting.
And while I'm at it, throw in rodeo.
