Political figures throughout California including Riverside County are up in arms over Mexican President Enrique PeŮa Nietoís visit with Governor Jerry Brown on Tuesday. Nieto was in the United States on a two-day trip to California, traveling to Sacramento to meet with lawmakers and deliver a speech to the Legislature.

The visit by Nieto is upsetting many government officials who are demanding Nieto free a member of the United States military who has been sitting in a Mexican prison for close to 150 days.

The City of Menifee unanimously passed Resolution No. 14-399 calling upon President Barack Obama to intervene with Nieto for the immediate release of USMC Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi from a Mexican jail.

"Mr. President, bring our troop home," wrote Menifee Mayor Scott Mann on a public social media page.

"It is a travesty Obama is not getting this Marine home," said Mann who is also a retired Naval Officer. "Obama released five terrorists for a traitor and we cannot get our Marine home is absolutely wrong."

Tahmooressi was in San Diego receiving treatment for post-traumatic stress when he made a wrong turn and ended up at the Mexican border. He informed the border patrol agents he did not want to enter Mexico and he admitted to having three personal firearms that were legally registered in the United States.

help but was informed since he was already in Mexican territory the San Diego authorities could not help him. Since then Tahmooressi has been jailed under what is reported as harsh conditions.

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly refused to have lunch with Nieto and other political figures in Sacramento,

"I wonít be dining with Tahmooressiís captors," Donnelly told Fox News in a televised interview with Fox News Anchorwoman, Greta Van Susteren. "I will be outside in the streets protesting you (Nieto) along with 500 to 1,000 Americans who want to see our Marine return home."

Donnelly said he has been getting thousands of calls and emails to his office once people heard he and other politicians are protesting Nietoís visit.

"Tahmooressi is not a criminal he made a mistake," Donnelly said.

Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez went on the Neil Cavuto Show and Carlos Amezcua on KEIB-AM 1150 Monday to discuss her own California State Resolution calling for the release of Tahmooressi.

Nietoís trip to the Governorís home came less than a month after Brown visited Mexico City on a four-day trade mission.

Menifee passed Resolution No. 14-399 calling on President Barack Obama to intervene with Nieto for the immediate release of Tahmooressi†on August 20.

"We hear about going to bat for illegal aliens and we donít go to bat for one of our Marines, it isnít right," said Mann.

The local right-wing and their obedient media never miss an opportunity to bash all thing Mexican. Troops must be trained about Mexico's no-gun policy and must be able to read the signs clearly posted at the border. Where are the cries for personal responsibility? Was this soldier on duty and invading yet another country or was he a civilian who disobeyed the law? Most of the gun violence in Mexico is from weapons brought in from America. Mayor Mann and this paper need to prove this allegation of "going to bat for illegal aliens" because the facts show that the Obama administration has overseen more deportations than previous administrations. When authoritarian right-wing dogma takes over and gets control of the press with no scrutiny, we have crossed the threshold of Fascism. Spinning and printing stories that tell one part of a story is not journalism and it is not the Free Press envisioned by the Founders. Since Valley News editors are selective on what comments get posted and when (censorship is another sign of fascism), I'm linking this article and posting my comment on my Facebook Page.

Remember people, when entering another country or passing through inspections, do not bring along your assault riffles, hand guns, grenades...ok! GOOD. Release your tensions against innocent migrant children, and maybe not the brightest marine will be released from a neighboring country's detention facility.

When you bring guns and ammo into Mexico you're subject to Mexican law. If you don't like Mexican laws then don't go there. Just because he's a US Marine doesn't mean he's exempt from following the law when abroad nor is innocent of committing this offense.

I am not "Right Wing", never have been..but if I'm starting to lean in that direction at this point in my life, it's because of one point only...the fact that our country is and has been overrun with illegals and no one is doing anything about it....least of all Governor Brown. Perhaps this is why a large segment of our population is quite ready to "bash all things Mexican". Regardless of the issue, I would still say Send Nieto Home and Brown With Him.....followed by 11 million illegals.....I doubt if Nieto is here to plead for his people to come home.................

Ok. He crossed the border with his weapons. Registered and legal here in the U.S. What was his intent?? I seriously doubt his intent was to go into Mexico and wreak havoc. He made a mistake! He has been sitting in jail for months with no resolve. We treat illegals better than that on this side - we treat 'CRIMINAL' illegals better than that on this side. We do more for the Mexican people than their own government does! We educate, finance, prosper many many illegals at the expense of our citizens! President Neito comes here and declares our state 'the other Mexico'! For me, a born and raised Californian United States citizen this is completely absurd! Mexico should release this soldier Immediately! For all 'mexican descent' or 'hispanics' in this county to sit back and spit on our soldier and America in general, I say 'SHAME ON YOU'! It is obvious to me, that many who come here do not understand what has in the past made America GREAT and why now, it is degenerating! At some point, there will be no reason to WANT to immigrate here! I say you 'ungrateful' slobs! Go back to Mexico!

The border problem is such that ANYONE can find a way to come here. That would include terrorists. Hello.

Of course our soldier should be released and Governor Brown should facilitate that.

All of you commenting on the Marine in Mexico have no clue what you are talking about. Really. He was living in his car. Has PTSD. Was looking for the VA to get help. Was discharged, and had no job. Was on the streets. Made a turn onto a road that he didn't know would take him into Mexico. Once you've turned, there's no way to go back, it's that way on purpose. You can't see your headed into Mexico until it's too late. There was only one sign posted before the turn, and that sign was knocked down on the ground. Even with the sign up its super easy to unwittingly make that turn. I've done it myself looking for a local Home Depot and wala! Big sign saying welcome to Mexico is staring me in the face and there's no fn way not to cross the border.

Now, just what the h//// kind of personal responsibility do you want out of the guy? Huh??!! Just all of you S......

I agree...our nephew was killed in a motorcycle accident in La Quinta. My brother in law asked my husband to go take pics of his motorcycle that had been hauled to a place down by the border, husband couldn't find the place, was rather lost and ended up crossing the border and ended up in Mexico by mistake without even knowing he was in Mexico...with a hassle to get back across the border into the U.S. It's very possible...

The new border crossing makes you take a right turn to go to the Mex border crossing, however once in that stretch, there is NO WAY OUT or NO WAY TO U-TURN out! This sucks, because the old crossing was straight and there was/is one last U-Turn out, but in the new configuration there is no exit since the outlet mall is on your north side. South side=border, north side=mall. Nowhere to turn out! THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED, CUT A PIECE OF THE MALL OUT (who cares, there are many d*** malls), THERE NEEDS TO BE AN EXIT FOR THIS TYPE OF SITUATION. In the old set-up, there was a side gate that would spit you right into the border traffic to come back to USA (by the gate), however in the new crossing, you are going right into TJ and it's a pain to "come back" to the border. And this is from someone who goes down to visit family multiple times a year. If you are going into TJ by accident, it will be a PITA to come back to the border crossing. Please do not bash Mexico in general. Thanks.

Regarding comment #11 - there is no way they would be in Mexico and not even know it. It is very apparent you are at a border crossing (there are gates, officers, customs, secondary inspection - YOU WILL KNOW IT'S A BORDER CROSSING), however I believe they could have ended up there by accident and not been able to turn back based on my comment about the current border crossing.

Not just possible. It's fact. And, just remember everyone, only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you. Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul, the other died for your freedom.

This was just on a regular street that took him into Mexico....it obviously was not at a crossing..
The tendency to "bash anything Mexico" sneaks up on you after quite a number of years of watching your town turn into an extension of TJ. It does affect your feelings toward Mexico, I have not gone there in 30 years now, no desire to. I do not want it here, either.

If jesus christ were alive today he'd be found pushing a stolen shopping cart through skid row babbling to himself about how he's the "son of god". Your fairy tale has no more truth than anyone else's. Speaking of mental illness, this marine clearly has mental problems. He needs psychiatric help not prison.
