Three people were hospitalized today in a vehicle fire that spread to brush on both sides of State Route 74 east of Hemet, prompting highway closures in both directions.

As of 2:15 p.m., State Route 74 was only closed to eastbound traffic at the Cranston Fire Station in Valle Vista, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fire was reported at 11:39 a.m. at McCall Park Road in the Mount San Jacinto State Park, the CHP said.

The fire was initially burning in a vehicle and a trailer hitched to it, but eventually ignited surrounding vegetation and spread at a moderate rate, said Tawny Cabral of the Riverside County Fire Department.

The three people from the burned vehicle were hospitalized in stable condition, she said.

Firefighters will remain at the scene performing mop up for about three hours, according to Cabral.
