Elsinore High School in Wildomar locks down after report of 'suspicious material'

Elsinore High School was locked down today amid reports of a gaseous release that might pose a risk to students and staff at the Lake Elsinore campus, but no one was injured.

The lockdown was initiated shortly after 2 p.m., affecting every building on campus, which is located at 21800 Canyon Drive.

Lake Elsinore Unified School District spokesman Mark Dennis told City News Service that the basis for the precautionary action could not immediately be confirmed, even though Riverside County sheriff's officials stated that dry ice exposure was the reason.

"It was some kind of suspicious material,'' Dennis said. "This happened just minutes before the final bell at 2:30. By 3 p.m., we were releasing students building by building. There was a lot of congestion, as you might imagine.''

He said about 2,000 youths are enrolled at the school.

According to Dennis, some parents and guardians misinterpreted the lockdown as an "active shooter'' incident and called the school district in a panic.

"I just want to assure everyone that it was nothing like that,'' he said.
