Western Municipal Water District, which provides the water and wastewater services for Lake Elsinore and portions of Temecula and Murrieta, reached out to offer special scholarships to local college and university students studying for water-related careers.

Since 2003, the scholarships have been provided to students at University of California Riverside, California State University San Bernardino, Riverside City College and Norco College.

link “Western knows the importance of having highly trained and qualified team members, and we want to continue to develop our region’s future leaders’ education and passion for water and the environment through these scholarships,” General Manager John Ross said. “As senior level staff members in the water industry retire, we have more jobs to fill; our scholarship programs help ensure that qualified candidates are available when it comes time to hire.”

The scholarships give the water district the opportunity to encourage and support students studying in water-related career paths. The yearly Lois B. Krieger Endowment Scholarship for $1,337 went to Kyle Pena. He is a graduate student at California State University San Bernardino and a past president of the Geology Club who is studying to be a paleoseismologist.

Eileen Tower, a public police student at University of California Riverside, received the $900 per year from the Charles D. Field Endowed Scholarship. She has a concentration in environment and urban planning.

The Western Municipal Water District Endowed Scholarships of $500 each went to Michael Pimentel from Riverside City College, who is a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society and is majoring in business administration, and to Joshua Dailey from Norco College, a first-generation college student studying to teach math and science.
