Cal Fire 2017 totals prompt fire safety readiness

EL CAJON – Cal Fire has provided periodic updates on current statewide wildland fire statistics throughout 2017. Early on, the organization recognized that California was experiencing an unprecedented increase in the total number of fires as well as total acres burned.

According to Cal Fire San Diego, from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2017, Cal Fire was called to 7,117 fires over 505,956 acres for local incidents, 2,016 fires over 742,650 acres for federal incidents and 9,133 fires over 1,248,606 acres combined. The numbers for 2016 were lower at 4,785 fires over 244,319 acres, and an average 4,83...
