MENIFEE – Burglars broke into a Menifee pet shop that specializes in selling exotic birds, stealing an unknown number of the winged creatures before making their getaway Friday, March 16.

The theft was reported about 9 a.m. at Birds-N-Paradise & Parrot Gardens, 27620 Encanto Drive, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Gary LeClair said deputies were called to the location soon after it opened to investigate the theft.

It was unclear exactly when the break-in occurred, and the number and value of the birds taken were not immediately disclosed.

Investigators were still gathering evidence, asking anyone who might have information to call the sheriff's Perris station at (951) 210-1054.

According to the Birds-N-Paradise website, the business buys and sells birds, as well boards them and provides grooming services. Macaws, finches and parakeets are a few of the species available.
