Murrieta Mesa's Shamar Wright was named the All-Southwestern League Most Valuable Player for the 2017-18 season.

The 2018 All-Southwestern League Teams have been selected and though it is usually customary to wait until the season is actually over before the selections are announced, Coach Jones from Murrieta Mesa gave approval since it is his Rams that are in the middle of a State playoff run, prolonging an end to a very successful season.

Jones stated, "Many of the Southwestern League teams are having their banquets around this time and it is hard to tell a player to keep their selection quiet since they worked so hard to get that accolade, so I agreed with the other coaches that even though we still have some games left, let us get through our banquet and then fill free to announce to the world your selections."

This past weekend the Murrieta Mesa Rams did hold their banquet, a day after defeating Crean Lutheran 53-50 in Round Two action of the CIF Division 3 State Regional playoffs and sure enough, within minutes of their own announcements, the social media world was saturated with the news of who made the All-Southwestern League teams.

The big news was that Murrieta Mesa's Shamar Wright, who averaged 19.3 points a game and set a handful of records in what will be his one and only season as a Ram, has been named the League's Most Valuable Player. It is big news because usually the MVP comes from the First-place team, but due to the big numbers he put up this season (674 points and counting, 283 rebounds and counting), the small forward got the nod from every coach in the Southwestern League.

"Shamar is our school's first MVP ever in the sport of basketball. His impact on and off the court was huge for the dynamic of this team. Shamar crushed our school records for points and rebounds in a season and he deserved to be named Most Valuable Player. I feel the same for a few others, we easily had two or three players that impacted the league tremendously," added Jones.

Joining Wright on the All-Southwestern League First team is senior and teammate Giovanni Sanders who was another impact player for Jones and has been for the past three years. Sanders is in the top 5 for career points scored at Murrieta Mesa (573) and he leads in other categories like league assists (32) as well as season assists (97). The Rams continue their CIF State playoff run in the Regional semifinal game this week against Bishop Amat.

Other First team players include juniors Krystian Walton and Nate Jacobsen from Temecula Valley, who led the Golden Bears to a first-place tie in the Southwestern league, senior C.J. Stevenson and junior Christian Ross from Great Oak and Vista Murrieta senior Brenden Newble. The entire list for both First and Second Team players includes:
