Student-led protests empower communities' youths

A nationwide walkout that occurred last week empowered students to stand up for what they believe in, according to several students throughout the region.

Walk-outs were held across the nation Wednesday, March 14, to raise awareness of everything from gun control to mental health issues in response to the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 dead.

Most of the school districts in the region, opted to keep students on campus, and allowed students to hold events by flagpoles, in gymnasiums or on football fields. By all reports, the events...
