A man who was hurt today while bicycling on a dirt path south of Menifee was retrieved by a sheriff's helicopter crew.

The remote area rescue happened shortly before 3 p.m. in a canyon west of Keller Road and Scenic View Drive, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Emergency dispatchers received reports of a cyclist down in rugged terrain, and fire crews attempted to find the man, but were not immediately successful. A sheriff's helicopter crew based at Hemet-Ryan Airport was asked to help, and the crew spotted the victim minutes later in the canyon.

The nature of his injuries and how they occurred were unclear.
