UDATED: Fatal crash ties up traffic on Winchester Road in French Valley

A Riverside County Sheriff deputy works on the investigation into a three vehicle wreck that killed one at the intersection of Benton and Winchester Roads Sunday, April 8.

UPDATE April 9, 9 a.m.

A 59-year-old Winchester man was arrested Sunday, April 8, following a four-car crash at Winchester and Benton roads that a killed a 27-year-old woman and majorly injured her 28-year-old passenger.

Elvis Eugene Tate was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving under the influence and booked into the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in French Valley, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.

California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig wrote that the 27-year-old woman, Ashley Alcaraz of Winchester, was making a left turn onto Winchester Road from Benton Road in her 2016 Honda Civic on a green light.

Tate, driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant, ran a red light and proceeded north on Winchester Road, striking and instantly killing Alcaraz and injuring her passenger, Anthony L. Lewis.

Though initial reports indicated three cars were involved, the CHP news release says there were actually a total of four. The Mitsubishi and Honda continued out of control after the initial impact and crashed into two other cars in the southbound lanes -- a 2017 Fiat 00 and a 2000 Toyota Tacoma. The drivers of those vehicles were treated at the scene and released.

UPDATE: April 9, 8 a.m.

The victim of a fatal crash that occurred in French Valley Sunday, April 8, has been identified as a 27-year-old Winchester woman.

Ashley Alcaraz was killed in the three-vehicle collision which occurred at the intersection of Benton and Winchester Roads at 5:36 p.m., according to the Riverside County Coroner's office.

Alcaraz perished at the scene after first responders spent about 20 minutes trying to revive her, according to Valley News freelance photographer Joe Fannaselle who was on the scene with Murrieta Fire Department.

Three others were injured in the crash. Two of the injured were taken to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries while the third, evaluated at the scene by paramedics, declined further treatment.

About 20 firefighters, from five engine companies arrived on the scene of the crash which involved a fire that was quickly contained by firefighters.

Winchester Road was closed for several hours while first responders cleared the scene and Sheriff official investigated the collision. Traffic was diverted onto Ault and Benton Roads.

Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash.

UPDATE: April 8, 7:50 p.m.

One person was killed and three others were injured in a fiery three-car crash on Highway 79 and Benton Road in French Valley, according to fire officials.

About 20 firefighters arrived to the scene after the crash and subsequent fire were reported.

A total of four people were injured.

One of those people succumbed to his or her injuries at the scene. Two others were taken to a nearby hospital for moderate injuries. The last person, evaluated at the scene by paramedics, declined further treatment.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash.

A fatal multi-vehicle crash in the area of Highway 79 and Benton Road in French Valley tied up traffic and prompted the creation of a detour on Sunday evening.

The crash, noted as a fatality on a CHP incident log, appears to have been reported around 5:30 p.m. Sunday and involved multiple vehicles.

Law enforcement officials were detouring traffic heading into Temecula from Highway 79 onto Auld Road.
