Opening statements are expected to begin Monday in the trial of two men accused in the 2006 slaying of three people in Pinyon Pines.

Robert Lars Pape, 29, and Cristin Conrad Smith, 30, are each charged with three counts of murder with a special circumstance allegation of committing multiple murders, according to a news release from Riverside County District Attorney's Office Spokesman John Hall. The charges were filed on June 8, 2016.

Both men face life in prison without the possibility of parole if they're convicted, according to Hall.

Pape and Smith are charged with the Sept. 17, 2006, murders of Jon Hayward, Vicki Friedli, and Vicki’s daughter Becky.

Shortly before 10 a.m. that day, firefighters were called to a home in the 68000 block of Alpine Drive in the mountain community. They found Becky Friedli's body on fire in a wheel barrow near the home.

After extinguishing the house fire, firefighters then found the bodies of Vicki Friedli and Hayward inside.

The case is being prosecuted by Chief Assistant District Attorney John Aki and Managing Deputy District Attorney Brandon Smith.
