A 51-year-old Palm Desert man suffered fatal injuries Sunday, April 15, when he crashed head-on with a car in Murrieta as he tried to evade a pursuing CHP officer.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig, a CHP officer tried to do a traffic stop on the motorcyclist on northbound Interstate 15 north of Winchester Road because he had been passing slower moving vehicles on the right shoulder.

The motorcyclist refused to stop and led the officer on a chase on the 15 before transitioning to Interstate 215 and getting off at Los Alamos Road.

The man was on Whitewood Road when he failed to negotiate a curve because of his speed. He struck the driver of a Honda traveling in the opposite direction just north of Blackthorne Drive.

The driver of the Honda, a 61-year-old Murrieta man, was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center in Murrieta after complaining of pain.

The motorcyclist was conscious not long after the crash. He was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar and later died from his injuries there. His name had not been released by the Riverside County coroner’s office as of press time.

The California Highway Patrol Temecula Area Office is investigating the crash.
