Visitors to Hemet's Bill Gray Park on Lake Street at Charlton Street will see this new sign and an up-to-date seven-unit exercise system to encourage those 13 and older to exercise and stay healthy. The system was installed by the partnership of Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District, Healthy Valley Foundation and Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation.

Valley-Wide Recreation, Healthy Valley Foundation and Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation teamed up to purchase and install an Outdoor Fitness System at Hemet's Bill Gray Park designed to encourage those 13 and older to improve their health in the park.

The official opening of the most up-to-date 7-unit outdoor fitness system came Friday, April 13, in special ceremonies at Bill Gray Park on the southeast corner of Lake and Charlton Streets in east Hemet.

Dean Wetter, of Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District, acting as master of ceremonies welcomed members of the Hemet San Jacinto Chamber of Commerce, Valley-Wide Recreation Board members, Hemet City Councilmembers, Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation Board and Healthy Valley Foundation officers and members and other guests.

He praised Ed Formica, D.D.S. who two years ago envisioned a series of local parks the would include healthy recreation equipment free to park visitors like the system made by Health Beat Equipment now in Bill Gray Park. It was Dr. Formica's belief that medical doctors and dentist should not just treat sick or injured people but should support healthy living. He found support for his idea to encourage healthy living from Valley-Wide and the health foundations who joined with him in his goal of building the free exercise systems in public parks.

It is the second system in Valley-Wide's regional park system. The first is in the Valley-Wide Regional Park on Esplanade Avenue and State Street in San Jacinto.

The 7-unit health system, built to hold up to any weather, includes and Elliptical, Chest and Back Press, Pull-up/Dip, Cardio Stepper, Squat Press, Tai Chi Wheels and a Hand Cycler. The units are placed on a soft ground base and at Bill Gray overlook the children's play area. The location, under park shade trees, gives parents using the equipment a close view of the children's play area ensuring their safety.

Hemet Dentist Ed Formica tries out one of seven new exercise units installed at Valley-Wide's Bill Gray Park on Lake Street and Charlton Street while Rob Davis, Esq., president of Healthy Valley Foundation and Matt Duarte, president of Valley-Wide Recreation watches him work out. Healthy Valley Foundation, Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation and Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation partnered in purchasing the latest outdoor exercise system in the park.

The approximately $60,000 cost of the health system was borne by the three organizations, Health Valley Foundation, Valley-Wide Recreation and Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation. Wetter said that there are plans for putting the systems in other parks in the district with the next one on the Valle Vista Park on Fairview Avenue in Valle Vista.

The systems in the parks will "support a healthy active community which is important to us and important for the quality of life and so the three organizations share that in common and we're here to support a healthy active community," Wetter said.

Participants in the ribbon cutting included, Wetter; Howard Rosenthal from the Healthy Valley Foundation; Matthew Duarte, president Valley-Wide Board of Directors; Rob Davis Esq., president Healthy Valley Foundation; Matt Brudin, president of Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation; Hemet Mayor Michael Perciful; Hemet Mayor Pro Tem Karlee Meyer; and many others from the city, foundations Valley-Wide, Adame Landscape, the Chamber and the three organizations.
