Parents chase, detain alleged child molester at Menifee park

Last updated 4/30/2018 at 10:16am

A 21-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of sexually assaulting a young girl at a park in Menifee after being chased down and detained by a group of parents.

Roland George Riddell was arrested on suspicion of child molestation and performing lewd acts on a child under 14, online jail records show. He was booked into the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in French Valley and remained there Thursday with bail set at $55,000.

According to a news release written by sheriff's Sgt. Curt Harris, authorities arrived to La Ladera Park at 29629 La Ladera Road about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and learned that parents had chased Riddell from the park and then detained him after witnessing the sexual assault.

After interviewing Riddell at a separate location and interviewing witnesses, deputies arrested Riddell on one count of annoying or molesting a minor, a misdemeanor.

Sheriff's deputies then interviewed Riddell a second time. Based on information from that interview, and because of the victim's age, Riddell was arrested on the felony lewd acts count.

Sheriff's officials are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to contact Officer Josh Cail at the Menifee Police Department by calling (951) 210-1000, or emailing [email protected]
