Another beautiful day in Anza greeted players for the first day of assessment and training with the new flag football league sponsored by High Country Recreation Saturday, April 21. The Hamilton High School fields came to life with enthusiastic young athletes and their parents and coaches.

The coed flag football program is designed to introduce children to the fundamentals of football and is offered to athletes from the third to the eighth grades. The competitors learned skills such as throwing and catching, coordination and footwork. By being involved in the program, they also learn teamwork and build friendships.

Coach Joe McGowan huddles with his team at the opening practice of the High Country Recreation flag football season Saturday, April 21.

The season began April 21, with games to be held weekly until May 26. Three coaches have volunteered their time to help make this program a success: Jeff Walls, Mike Fitzgerald and Joe McGowan.

"At a fraction of the cost in either Temecula or Palm Springs, it's an incentive for local parents to keep their kids in sports without having to drive off the hill," Walls said.

The group benefits from donations made by Hamilton K-8 Elementary School, their PTA and Hamilton High School Football.

Anyone interested in obtaining additional information about HCR and the sports programs, in volunteering or donating funds can contact Walls at (951) 514-8588 or at [email protected]
