A 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed today when he broadsided a flatbed truck that allegedly pulled in front of him on a road just west of Temecula, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim, identified only as a Murrieta man, was fatally injured about 3:40 p.m. at the intersection of Avenida Del Oro and Rancho California Road, in an unincorporated community known as De Luz, CHP Officer Mike Lassig said.

Investigators said the rider was headed south on Rancho California when the driver of the truck -- 66-year-old Luis Villasenor -- pulled out to make a northbound turn from eastbound Avenida Del Oro.

When the truck was in front of him the motorcyclist attempted to brake, but he couldn't stop in time and collided with the larger vehicle, causing him to be flung off of the Yamaha and onto the roadway, according to Lassig.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived minutes later and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Villasenor was detained and questioned by officers but not arrested.

The investigation was ongoing, Lassig said.
