MENIFEE - An 18-year-old man was shot and killed in a residential neighborhood in Menifee, officials said Sunday, May 27. The shooting was reported just after midnight Saturday near the

intersection of Cleary Street and Michener Drive, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found the 18-year-old -- later identified as Devaughn Perkins of Menifee -- shot and unresponsive in the street.

Perkins was a graduate from Murrieta Mesa High School and just completed his first year as a business major at Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he maintained a 3.4 grade-point average and stayed out of trouble, according to family members and friends talking to reporters.

"Officers performed life-saving measures, but the victim died from injuries sustained from the shooting," sheriff's officials said.

Initial reports indicated that the shooting may have occurred outside of a large house party.

Sheriff's officials said the suspect was still outstanding and that an investigation was underway. Family and friends of the victim said they hoped the person responsible decides to come forward.

Authorities asked that anyone with information about the shooting call Detective Stoyer with the Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777 or Detective Salisbury at (951) 210-1000.

A public candlelight vigil for the teenage victim was planned for 7 p.m. Sunday at The View Church, 26701 McCall Blvd. in Sun City.

Perkin's family has set up a GoFundMe page to help collect donations to cover funeral expenses.
