County renews lease for Canyon Lake library branch

Last updated 5/30/2018 at 11:15am

The City of Riverside owns the property where the County of Riverside's library branch in Canyon Lake is located, and the lease between the city and the county has been extended for an additional two years.

Although the lease for the library in the 31500 block of Railroad Canyon Road expired Jan. 31, the city and county chose to finalize the extension process rather than to terminate the lease. A 5-0 Riverside County Board of Supervisors vote May 22 approved a new two-year lease retroactive to Feb. 1, 2018, and ending Jan. 31, 2020.

The Canyon Lake library branch is approximately 2,711 square feet. The county has leased the library from the city since February 2000. The library's adult literacy services include one-on-one literacy tutoring, English as a Second Language classes, and family literary literacy events, but the Canyon Lake branch is also a full-service library with materials available for checkout.

The previous lease charged the county $1.35 per square foot per month, or $3,652.51 each month and $43,830.12 annually. The new rate of $1.39 per square foot equates to $3,760.26 monthly and $45,123.12 per year. The lease includes a 2.95 percent rental adjustment for 2019. The county is responsible for telephone and electronic data services while the city is responsible for all other utilities including electricity, water and trash. The city is also responsible for custodial services and for maintenance.
