A 59-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed when he crossed in front of a vehicle near a Perris intersection, authorities said today.

The fatality occurred about 8:50 p.m. Thursday on the Ramona Expressway, just west of North Perris Boulevard, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The victim, a Van Nuys resident whose name was withheld pending family notification, was attempting to cross the four-lane expressway when a westbound motorist hit him, sheriff's officials said.

The driver immediately stopped and called 911.

Paramedics arrived moments later and found the victim in grave condition. He was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he was pronounced dead.

According to sheriff's officials, a preliminary investigation indicated that the victim attempted to cross Ramona where there is no marked crosswalk.

Deputies determined that the motorist was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was not arrested.
