A suspected drunk driver who was possibly traveling over 100 mph exited Interstate 215 in Menifee Thursday and crashed into a fence, injuring himself but no one else.

Nader Awad, 33, of Moreno Valley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after the 12:30 p.m. wreck at the southbound exit of I-215 to Ethanac Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Awad was at the wheel of a 2012 Subaru Legacy when he steered off of the freeway and onto the exit ramp, nearly slamming into a retainer wall.

Witnesses told the CHP that it appeared the suspect was traveling in excess of 100 mph at the time.

Officer Mike Lassig told City News Service that Awad jetted down the off-ramp and plowed through the intersection, then jumped a curb and went down an embankment adjacent to the freeway.

“The driver continued down the embankment until running into a chain link fence along the perimeter of the freeway,'' Lassig said.

He said no other vehicles were involved.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location a few minutes later and determined Awad had minor to moderate injuries from the wreck.

He was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment.

Lassig said that he would be booked into the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta Thursday afternoon for the DUI allegation.

Awad has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
