Local players selected in MLB draft, talent is on the rise

Former Chaparral Puma, Brhet Bewley, who just wrapped up his junior year at the University of San Diego, was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in this year's MLB draft.

The first-year player draft, which is Major League Baseball's primary mechanism for assigning amateur baseball players, from high schools, colleges, and other amateur baseball clubs, to its teams, took place June 4-6 in New Jersey and our area had great representation.

The first 43 picks, including the first round and compensatory picks, were broadcast by MLB Network Monday, June 4, as the remainder of the draft was streamed on MLB.com Tuesday, June 5, and Wednesday, June 6.
