A man suspected of stealing a Mercedes-Benz in Lake Elsinore and leading Riverside County sheriff's deputies on a pursuit into a neighboring city was being held today on $100,000 bail.

Jose Orlando Velasco, 25, was arrested Thursday night and booked into the Indio Jail on suspicion of auto theft, felony evading, receiving stolen property, vandalism, burglary and resisting arrest.

According to sheriff's Sgt. Dan Ponder, at about 6 p.m., deputies were alerted that a vehicle had been reported stolen in the area of Grand Avenue and Sangston Drive, and a patrol unit spotted the Mercedes sedan going south on Grand, near Ontario Way.

Ponder said that deputies signaled Velasco to stop, but he allegedly floored it, prompting the deputies to give chase.

"The pursuit lasted for several minutes as it traveled into the city of Wildomar, circling continuously through the Sedco Hills area,'' the sergeant said.

He said a spike strip was deployed, and the suspect ran over it, flattening several tires, but he "continued to drive the Mercedes until he became involved in a minor collision with another vehicle.''

Velasco stopped the car a few minutes later and was taken into custody without further trouble. No one was injured.

According to Ponder, the suspect had a felony arrest warrant for unresolved charges related to a prior vehicle theft.
