Cities slow to get on board with legalized recreational marijuana despite voter approval

Voters in most cities throughout southwest Riverside County voted to approve Prop 64 legalizing recreational marijuana, but city governments are slow to get onboard.

It's been a year and a half since California's Proposition 64, which legalized recreational marijuana, was passed, and more than six months since it went into effect.

The law allows for sale of marijuana to adults over the age of 21, but allows local governments to regulate and restrict marijuana-related businesses as they see fit.

In southwest Riverside County, nearly every city continues to prohibit marijuana sales; however, majorities in nearly every city in the region – albeit slight majorities in many cases – voted to approve Proposition 64.
