Firefighters battle Benton fire over 4th of July and days following

A helicopter pulls water from Lake Riverside in Aguanga to battle the Benton fire, Wednesday, July 4.

A vegetation fire that broke out near Anza, July 4, is now 100 percent contained, according to Riverside County Fire Department officials.

The "Benton Fire," which was first reported at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, quickly charred 63 acres at Benton Road and Crams Corner Drive in Anza.

Two fire crews, 120 firefighters, five air tankers, three water tenders, three bulldozers and four helicopters battled the blaze.

According to Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann, the first firefighters to arrive encountered a well-established column of smoke.
