RIVERSIDE - An armed man was shot and killed at the end of a police chase that began in Hemet, ended in Riverside and included the suspect driving recklessly and firing at authorities, police said today.

At around 7:30 p.m. Friday, officers with the Hemet Police Department were dispatched to the home of a man suspected of shooting into a field earlier in the week.

When officers spotted the suspect's convertible near Kirby Street and Devonshire Avenue and attempted to pull him over, he sped off and led officers on a pursuit, going westbound on Devonshire Avenue then southbound on California Avenue, according to Officer Ryan Railsback with the Riverside Police Department.

The suspect fired at pursuing officers and Riverside County sheriff's deputies in the 200 block of North California Avenue, but did not injure anyone, Hemet Police Lt. Eric Dickson said.

The suspect then headed west on Highway 74 and north on the 215 Freeway.

Riverside City police took over the pursuit when the suspect exited on Van Buren Boulevard, where he was driving recklessly at high speeds and crossed over to the wrong side of the road several times, according to Railsback.

The pursuit moved to Arlington Avenue, where just before California Avenue, the suspect allegedly drove toward oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road and tried to maneuver through stopped traffic before his car became stuck between two vehicles.

The suspect, Arthur Levario Jr. of Hemet, fired at pursuing officers and Riverside County sheriff's deputies in the 200 block of North California Avenue, but did not injure anyone, Hemet Police Lt. Eric Dickson said.

"As officers were going to conduct a high-risk stop, an officer-involved shooting occurred,'' Railsback said.

A SWAT team was called to render the situation safe after the suspect appeared to be slumped over and did not respond to officers' commands, he said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arlington Avenue near California Avenue is expected to be closed for several hours while the investigation continues.

No officers or deputies were injured during the pursuit.
