WINCHESTER - An 82-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman were killed in a two-vehicle collision in Winchester that was triggered when one of the vehicles veered across a center median, slamming into the other vehicle, authorities said today.

The head-on wreck happened at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday on Domenigoni Parkway, a half-mile east of Patterson Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Darren Meyer said a Hemet man at the wheel of a 2000 Saturn Ion was going eastbound on Domenigoni when he "swerved left'' and traveled across the dirt center median dividing the four-lane passage.

About that time, Lorraine Johansen of Menifee was passing through the area, driving westbound on Domenigoni in her 2016 Toyota Corolla, Meyer said.

He said the Saturn driver, whose name was not immediately released, steered directly into Johansen's path, and the two vehicles collided.

A Riverside County Fire Department engine crew spotted the wreck shortly after it happened and went to the scene. The man was pronounced dead by paramedics. Johansen suffered catastrophic injuries and was taken to Menifee Valley Medical Center, where she died less than an hour later.

An autopsy is pending on the man's remains, and the investigation is continuing, according to Meyer.
