Frequency changes planned for over-the-air TV channels

LOS ANGELES – If your family has “cut the cord,” or you just live in an area that can’t get cable, you probably get your television reception with antennas.

According to the National Association of Broadcasters, big changes are coming to the frequencies associated with some of the channels they broadcast.

On Monday KJLA moved frequencies and it was the first station of many in the Los Angeles broadcast area over the next two years to do so.

The changes are necessary because of a recent FCC frequency/spectrum auction, nearly 1,000 television stations need to move frequencies prior to 2020.

According to Steve Gardner of the National Association of Broadcasters, the changes only affect people who watch TV over the air, but he said more than 77 million do so across the United States.

When each station moves frequencies people who rely on antennas for reception will need to rescan their televisions. Gardner insists it is a simple process, but, “for some people it could be a challenge.”

For those with access to the internet, instructions are available at tvanswers.org. For those that don’t, follow these instructions. First, select scan or autotune from your TV or converter box control menu. Your TV will do the rest and it should take a couple of minutes to complete the process.

Once the process is done, your favorite channels will still be on the same channel numbers as before.
