TEMECULA - One man was killed and another was seriously injured when their golf cart tumbled down a steep embankment in a campground east of Temecula in what investigators believe was an alcohol-fueled crash, authorities said today.

The men were driving a "lifted'' off-road golf cart at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday in the campground area of the Vail Lake Resort, just off Highway 79, when the driver drove off the paved road and through a vacant campground, the California Highway Patrol said.

The cart overturned when it went off an embankment that "becomes increasingly steep and uneven as it descends,'' ejecting both men, the CHP said.

A 38-year-old Corona man was pronounced dead at the scene and a 37-year-old Chino man was taken to Inland Valley Hospital with major injuries.

Investigators thus far have not determined who the driver was, but the CHP said alcohol was likely a factor in the crash and that the men were not wearing safety equipment.
