LAKE ELSINORE - A man hiking through the Cleveland National Forest west of Lake Elsinore today collapsed from heat exhaustion and was rescued by a helicopter crew.

The man, whose name was not released, fell ill shortly before 2 p.m. on the Bear Canyon Trail, just south of the Ortega (74) Highway, near the Tenaja Truck Trail, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

County firefighters and personnel from the Cleveland National Forest tried to reach the man on foot, but a Cal Fire helicopter crew spotted him first and performed a hoist rescue, transporting the hiker to an ambulance waiting on a roadside a few miles away.

About 3 p.m., he was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar in moderate condition.

It was unclear where the hiker was headed and how long he had been on the trail.
