RIVERSIDE - Riverside County supervisors today awarded a $32.54 million contract to a Colorado-based firm for construction of a freeway interchange expansion in Menifee that's expected to ease traffic congestion and expedite travel through the area.

In a 4-0 vote, with Supervisor Marion Ashley absent, the Board of Supervisors selected Guy F. Atkinson Construction to handle the Interstate 215/Scott Road Interchange Improvement Project, which is slated to get underway this fall and take roughly two years to complete.

Atkinson's Irvine Division will be overseeing each stage of the revamp, according to county Transportation & Land Management Agency officials. A dozen prospective contractors, including Atkinson, placed bids for the work, but the Golden, Colorado-headquartered firm was ultimately identified as the preferred "responsive and responsible'' bidder, TLMA documents stated.

The project, which has been on the county's to-do list since 2005, cleared several environmental and engineering hurdles in the last several years.

The TLMA is managing the project under an agreement with Caltrans, as well as the cities of Menifee and Murrieta. Construction will occur in two phases, with the first phase focusing on the expansion of the Scott Road overcrossing, according to the TMLA.

The improvements involve expanding the current two-lane overpass at the freeway to six lanes, replacing the standard freeway exit and entrance ramps to loop ramps that can accommodate more vehicles and adding new turn lanes for both northbound and southbound traffic.

Roadway shoulders will also be widened, and there will be drainage, lighting and signage improvements along Scott, between Antelope and Haun roads, according to the TLMA.

Federal and state highway funds, along with fees collected from area developers in Menifee and Murrieta, will cover the bulk of the project's costs.
